A bespoke trekking in nepal adventure.
The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and adventurous high-altitude trekking journeys, taking you deep into the eastern Himalayas through the spectacular Kanchenjunga Region. This challenging trek crosses the dramatic Lumba Sumba La Pass at 5,177 meters, passing through pristine forests, remote valleys, traditional mountain villages, and rugged alpine landscapes. For experienced trekkers seeking an authentic adventure away from Nepal’s busier trails, this is one of the most rewarding routes for Trekking in Nepal.
The journey begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, followed by a drive through eastern Nepal to Lelep. From here, the trail gradually enters the remote Himalayan wilderness, passing through Ela Danda, Selep Kharka, and the traditional village of Olangchung Gola. As the trail gains altitude, the landscape changes from lush forests and river valleys to alpine terrain and spectacular mountain scenery.
A major highlight of the trek is crossing Lumba Sumba La Pass (5,177m). After reaching Upper Langmale and Pass Camp, the route climbs toward the high pass before descending to Chaurikharka. The journey then continues through remote settlements including Thudam, Kharka, Chyamthang, Hatiya, and Gola before reaching Tumlingtar. The combination of challenging trails, remote mountain communities, high-altitude landscapes, and wilderness makes the Lumba Sumba Pass Trek a truly rewarding Himalayan experience.
The trek also provides an opportunity to experience the rich cultural diversity of the Kanchenjunga Region Trekking area. Along the trail, you encounter traditional mountain communities and experience their distinctive lifestyles, customs, and warm hospitality. Because this is a remote and less-developed trekking route, accommodation and facilities are more basic than on popular trekking trails, making proper preparation, suitable equipment, and good physical fitness important.
With its remote trails, spectacular Himalayan landscapes, challenging high pass, and authentic mountain culture, the Lumba Sumba Pass Trek is ideal for trekkers looking to explore a less-traveled side of Nepal. Before beginning this adventure, we recommend reviewing our Nepal Travel Planning Guide for useful information on choosing the right trek, preparing for your journey, understanding trekking conditions, and planning your overall Nepal adventure.

Best Time to Visit Lumba Sumba Pass Trek
The best time for the Lumba Sumba Pass Trek is during spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when the weather is generally stable, the skies are clearer, and mountain views are at their best. Spring brings colorful rhododendron forests and pleasant trekking conditions, while autumn offers crisp mountain views and generally dry trails.
Winter trekking is possible for experienced trekkers with appropriate equipment and preparation, but heavy snowfall can make the high-altitude sections and Lumba Sumba La Pass difficult or temporarily inaccessible. The monsoon season is generally less suitable because of frequent rainfall, slippery trails, cloudy mountain views, and difficult road conditions during the approach and return journeys.

Accommodation & Meals
The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek 17 Days is a remote wilderness camping adventure, with full-board camping accommodation throughout the trekking section. Two nights of hotel accommodation are provided in Kathmandu on a breakfast basis, while during the trek our experienced trekking crew sets up and manages the camps at designated overnight locations.
Camping accommodation provides a comfortable base in one of Nepal's most remote trekking environments. Tents are arranged for trekkers, while the supporting crew manages the kitchen, dining arrangements, camp setup, and necessary trekking logistics. Facilities become increasingly basic as the route enters the higher and more isolated sections of the eastern Himalayas.
A full-board meal plan is provided throughout the trek, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals are prepared by the trekking kitchen crew at camp using a combination of fresh ingredients carried from lower settlements and essential supplies transported by the support team. The menu is planned to provide nutritious and energizing meals suitable for long trekking days and high-altitude conditions.
The camping experience is an important part of the Lumba Sumba Pass adventure, allowing you to stay overnight in peaceful wilderness locations far from the developed trekking routes.

Difficulty Level & Preparation
The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek is considered a challenging high-altitude wilderness trek because of its remote location, long walking days, limited facilities, and the crossing of Lumba Sumba La Pass at 5,177 meters. The route includes significant elevation gains and losses, rugged mountain terrain, and several days of trekking far from road access and developed settlements.
Previous high-altitude trekking experience is recommended. Trekkers should have good cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and the ability to walk for approximately 5–9 hours on consecutive days. A positive attitude, proper acclimatization, and careful pacing are especially important when approaching the high camps and crossing the pass.
Proper preparation is essential for this remote camping adventure. Regular walking, hiking, cardiovascular exercise, and strength training before the trek can help improve endurance. Trekkers should also bring suitable clothing and equipment for changing weather, cold nights, high-altitude conditions, and camping.
For practical preparation advice, explore our Nepal Trekking Difficulty Guide, Altitude Sickness in Nepal Guide, and Nepal Trekking Safety Guide.
Transportation & Route Information
The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek 17 Days begins with a private transfer to Kathmandu Domestic Airport and a scenic flight to Bhadrapur in eastern Nepal. From Bhadrapur, the journey continues by private vehicle through Ilam and Taplejung toward Lelep, where the trekking adventure begins.
From Lelep, the trail enters the remote eastern Himalayan wilderness, passing through Ela Danda, Selep Kharka, and Olangchung Gola. The route then climbs toward Upper Langmale and Pass Camp before crossing the spectacular Lumba Sumba La Pass (5,177m) and descending toward Chaurikharka.
After crossing the pass, the trail continues through the remote settlements and wilderness of Thudam, Kharka, Chyamthang, Hatiya, and Gola before reaching Tumlingtar. From Tumlingtar, a domestic flight brings you back to Kathmandu, followed by a private transfer to your hotel.
The combination of domestic flights, private road transportation, remote trails, and full-board camping makes this a genuine wilderness journey through one of Nepal's least-explored Himalayan landscapes.

Permits & Entry Fees
The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek passes through protected and restricted areas of eastern Nepal and therefore requires several official permits and entry documents, including the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit, Makalu-Barun National Park Entry Permit, Restricted Area Permit, and TIMS Card. Trekking Equipment Checklist
The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek is a remote, high-altitude full-board camping trek reaching 5,177 meters, so having the right personal equipment is essential. Warm clothing, comfortable and reliable trekking boots, a suitable sleeping bag, waterproof layers, sun protection, trekking poles, and other personal trekking gear are important for changing weather and high-altitude conditions. Mountain King Treks provides detailed equipment recommendations before departure based on the season and current trekking conditions. For the complete packing list, see our Nepal Trekking Equipment Checklist.
Lumba Sumba Culture & Himalayan Wilderness Experience
The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek offers much more than a challenging high-altitude crossing. The journey takes you through remote communities and pristine landscapes in eastern Nepal, providing an opportunity to experience traditional Himalayan lifestyles and cultures that remain closely connected with the mountains.
Olangchung Gola is one of the cultural highlights of the route, with its traditional mountain settlement and distinctive Himalayan character. As the trail continues toward the Lumba Sumba Pass and into the remote valleys beyond, trekkers experience a landscape where local communities, forests, rivers, alpine meadows, and high mountain terrain remain closely connected.
The trek also passes through some of the most remote and peaceful landscapes between the Kanchenjunga and Makalu areas. The limited infrastructure and full-board camping experience make it possible to experience the wilderness in a more authentic way than on Nepal's popular tea-house trekking routes.
The combination of remote villages, Himalayan culture, pristine forests, dramatic mountain landscapes, and a challenging high-altitude pass makes the Lumba Sumba Pass Trek an exceptional adventure for travelers seeking an authentic and less-explored side of Trekking in Nepal.
