Govinda Prasad Sapkota – Founder of Mountain King Treks
Meet Govinda Prasad Sapkota, founder of Mountain King Treks & Expedition, with 35+ years of Himalayan trekking and expedition experience across Nepal and the Himalayas.
A Lifetime Dedicated to the Himalayas
Govinda Prasad Sapkota is the founder of Mountain King Treks & Expedition and a veteran Himalayan trekking professional with more than 35 years of experience in Nepal's adventure tourism industry. His journey began long before modern tea houses, internet communication, GPS devices, and comfortable trekking infrastructure transformed the Himalayan trails. Starting from the very bottom as a porter, he gradually worked his way through every level of the trekking profession, gaining firsthand experience in all aspects of expedition and trekking operations.
Today, after decades of guiding travelers across Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, India, Sikkim, and the greater Himalayan region, Govinda continues to share his passion, knowledge, and leadership with trekkers from around the world.
From Porter to Professional Guide
Like many Himalayan mountain professionals of his generation, Govinda's career began as a porter on the Everest Base Camp Trek. In those days, trekking in Nepal was very different from what visitors experience today. Most treks were fully organized camping expeditions requiring large support teams, extensive logistics, and careful planning.
Even a small trekking group often traveled with a guide, Sherpas, cooks, kitchen staff, and multiple porters carrying food supplies, tents, kerosene, cooking equipment, and camping gear. Every day involved teamwork, discipline, and dedication to ensure guests enjoyed a safe and comfortable journey in remote mountain regions.
Through years of hard work, Govinda advanced from porter to assistant guide, commonly known as a Sherpa position in trekking operations. He also worked closely with camping crews, gaining experience in kitchen operations, campsite management, logistics, porter coordination, guest care, and mountain safety. This comprehensive background gave him a unique understanding of every responsibility involved in operating successful Himalayan expeditions.
The Golden Age of Camping Treks
During the early years of Nepal's trekking industry, most journeys were organized as camping expeditions. Guests traveled with entire support teams that established camps ahead of their arrival.
Porters carrying tents would move ahead to prepare campsites. Kitchen crews would arrive early to prepare meals and hot drinks. Upon arrival at lunch stops or camps, guests were welcomed with refreshments, tea, coffee, fruit drinks, and freshly prepared meals. Evenings often included hot soups, snacks, multi-course dinners, desserts, and cultural entertainment around the camp.
Each morning began with bed tea delivered directly to the tents, followed by warm washing water, breakfast, and preparations for another day in the mountains. These experiences taught Govinda the importance of hospitality, organization, teamwork, and attention to detail—principles that continue to guide Mountain King Treks today.
Professional Guide Training and Certification
After several years of practical mountain experience, Govinda received recommendations from trekking companies to apply for professional guide training through the Hotel Management and Tourism Training Centre (HMTC).
At that time, guide training was highly competitive. Unlike today, when many training opportunities are available, only a limited number of candidates were selected each season. Hundreds of applicants competed for a small number of positions, and admission required interviews, examinations, and proven field experience.
Successfully completing this training marked an important milestone in Govinda's professional career and established the foundation for decades of leadership throughout Nepal's trekking industry.
Exploring Every Corner of Nepal
Over the years, Govinda has guided travelers across virtually every major trekking region of Nepal. His experience includes Everest, Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu, Mustang, Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Dhaulagiri, Rolwaling, the Far West, and numerous remote areas connected to the Great Himalayan Trail.
From famous routes to little-known mountain valleys, he has spent decades building relationships with local communities, understanding regional cultures, and gaining intimate knowledge of Nepal's diverse landscapes.
His extensive field experience allows him to design journeys that combine safety, cultural understanding, authentic local experiences, and unforgettable Himalayan adventures.
Beyond Nepal: Tibet, Bhutan, India, and Sikkim
Govinda's experience extends beyond Nepal's borders. He has led numerous journeys in Tibet, including more than forty pilgrimages and trekking adventures around Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.
He has also guided travelers in Bhutan, Sikkim, Darjeeling, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, and other Himalayan destinations. These international experiences have broadened his understanding of Himalayan cultures and strengthened his ability to organize complex multi-country adventures.
Founding Mountain King Treks & Expedition
After decades of working throughout the Himalayas, Govinda founded Mountain King Treks & Expedition with a clear vision: to provide authentic, safe, professionally organized, and culturally meaningful travel experiences.
The company was built on the values he learned throughout his career—honesty, responsibility, personal service, local knowledge, and respect for both guests and mountain communities.
Today, Mountain King Treks continues to operate according to those same principles, helping travelers discover the true spirit of the Himalayas through carefully designed trekking, climbing, cultural, wildlife, and pilgrimage journeys.
A Legendary Dolpo Expedition – The Spirit of the Himalayas (Complete Story)
One of the most unforgettable journeys in Govinda Prasad Sapkota’s career was a 45-day expedition through the remote Dolpo region in 1995, where he served as the lead guide (Sardar) for a Swiss trekking group.
The journey began from Pokhara and followed a long and challenging route through Babiyachaur, Dharapani, Lumsang, Jaljala, Gurjaghat, and Dhorpatan, gradually entering the high Himalayan wilderness. At that time, trekking routes were extremely remote, with very limited communication and no mobile phones or internet access.
After crossing Phagune Dhuri and continuing towards the Jangla Pass base camp area, the weather suddenly changed. Heavy snowfall continued for several days, covering the entire region. The harsh conditions made travel extremely difficult, and the team had to carefully manage safety, navigation, food, and shelter in deep snow.
Communication with the outside world was almost impossible. Helicopter support was not available due to widespread rescue operations in other affected regions. During this period, news of severe weather and accidents in other trekking regions of Nepal created concern across the country.
Because of the lack of communication, Govinda’s family, relatives, and trekking office had no information about the team’s condition. As days passed without contact, they feared the worst and believed the entire expedition group may have been lost in the mountains.
Despite these challenges, Govinda and his team continued with patience and strong leadership, ensuring the safety of all guests and staff in extreme conditions. At one point, the group was forced to take shelter in a yak hut buried under heavy snow. Using limited resources, they survived the storm with teamwork, hot drinks, and experience.
The expedition eventually continued through Dolpo, Shey Phoksundo Lake, Kagmara La Pass, and reached Jumla after 45 days of continuous trekking through some of the most remote and difficult terrain in Nepal.
When Govinda finally returned safely to Kathmandu, the reaction was unforgettable. His family, relatives, trekking office, and colleagues were shocked and overjoyed. They had assumed the worst during the long silence, and his safe return became a moment of relief, surprise, and celebration.
This journey remains a powerful example of resilience, leadership, and survival in the Himalayas, reflecting the true spirit of Himalayan expedition guiding.
Philosophy of Guiding
Govinda believes that trekking in Nepal is not just about reaching destinations—it is about human connection, cultural understanding, safety, and respect for nature.
His guiding philosophy is built on four core principles:
- Safety first in all conditions
- Respect for local communities and traditions
- Honest and responsible leadership
- Creating meaningful travel experiences, not just tours
He believes every trekker should experience the Himalayas in a way that feels authentic, safe, and deeply memorable.
Vision for Nepal Adventure Tourism
As a founder and veteran guide, Govinda’s vision is to promote Nepal as a world-class adventure destination while preserving its cultural heritage and natural environment.
He strongly supports responsible tourism that benefits local communities, protects fragile mountain ecosystems, and creates sustainable opportunities for future generations.
Mountain King Treks & Expedition continues to follow this vision by offering carefully designed trekking, climbing, cultural, pilgrimage, and expedition journeys across Nepal and the greater Himalayas.
