A bespoke tours in tibet adventure.
The Mount Kailash Pilgrimage Tour is a 10-day spiritual and overland journey from Kathmandu to Kathmandu, traveling through the Himalayan border into Tibet and onward to the sacred landscapes of Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. The journey combines pilgrimage, Tibetan culture, dramatic high-altitude scenery, and the challenging three-day Kailash Kora, making it a memorable experience for travelers seeking both spiritual meaning and Himalayan adventure.
The journey begins in Kathmandu and follows the scenic Himalayan road toward the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border before continuing across the vast Tibetan Plateau. From Kerung, the route passes through Saga and onward toward Lake Manasarovar, where travelers spend a night near this sacred lake surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery. The journey then continues to Darchen, the traditional gateway to the Mount Kailash Kora.
The three-day Kora is the spiritual and physical highlight of the tour. From Yama Dwar, the trail leads toward Dirapuk before crossing the challenging Dolma La Pass at approximately 5,630 meters and descending toward Zuthulpuk. After completing the Kora, the journey returns through Saga and Kerung before crossing the border back into Nepal.
This carefully arranged journey allows travelers to experience both the spiritual significance of the Kailash region and the extraordinary landscapes of western Tibet. Mount Kailash Pilgrimage Experience
The Mount Kailash Pilgrimage Tour is a unique journey combining spiritual significance, high-altitude adventure, and spectacular landscapes across western Tibet. From the Himalayan border at Kerung to sacred Lake Manasarovar and the remote valleys surrounding Mount Kailash, each stage of the journey offers a different experience.
The highlight is the three-day Kailash Kora, taking travelers through some of the most dramatic terrain in Tibet and across the challenging Dolma La Pass. The journey is physically demanding, but the combination of pilgrimage, mountain scenery, and Tibetan cultural traditions makes it deeply rewarding for prepared travelers.
Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash
Lake Manasarovar is one of the most sacred lakes in the Himalayan region and holds deep religious importance for several faith traditions. Its clear waters, surrounding mountains, and remote setting create a memorable stop before beginning the Kailash Kora.
Mount Kailash itself is regarded as a sacred mountain and an important pilgrimage destination. Travelers from different religious traditions undertake the Kora around the mountain as an act of devotion, reflection, and spiritual practice.
Kailash Kora
The Kora is completed over three days, beginning near Yama Dwar and continuing through Dirapuk, across Dolma La Pass, and onward to Zuthulpuk before returning toward Darchen.
The second day is the most demanding, with a steep ascent to Dolma La followed by a descent into the valley beyond. A slow pace, proper acclimatization, suitable equipment, and preparation for high-altitude conditions are essential.
Visa, Permits and Travel Arrangements
Travel to Tibet requires the appropriate China visa, Tibet Travel Permit, and other required permits or travel documents, depending on the traveler's nationality and current regulations. Requirements and processing times can change, so arrangements should be confirmed well before the planned journey.
Because this is a flexible tour rather than a fixed-date departure, travelers should book in advance and provide their valid passport and required documents early. Mountain King Treks coordinates the necessary Tibet permits and travel arrangements and will advise you about the appropriate timing for your Kathmandu arrival and Tibet departure.
Clients should not make a last-minute Tibet departure assumption until their visa, permits, border arrangements, and travel documents have been confirmed.
Altitude and Acclimatization
The Mount Kailash region is at very high altitude, with Dolma La Pass reaching approximately 5,630 meters. The journey therefore requires careful acclimatization and a steady pace.
The acclimatization stop in Kerung provides an opportunity to adjust before continuing toward the higher Tibetan Plateau. Travelers should stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary exertion, and communicate with the guide if they experience symptoms associated with altitude.
Accommodation and Meals
Accommodation is arranged in hotels and guesthouses along the overland route, with simpler accommodation during the Kailash Kora. Facilities in the remote Kailash region are basic compared with those in Kathmandu and major Tibetan cities.
Full Board meals are provided throughout the Tibet portion of the journey, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Meals are generally simple and suitable for the conditions of the remote mountain journey.
Best Time for the Pilgrimage
The main trekking and pilgrimage season is generally May to June and September to October, when conditions are often suitable for the Kailash Kora and mountain visibility can be favorable.
Weather in the Kailash region can change rapidly, particularly at high elevations. Travel dates should therefore be planned with some flexibility, and final arrangements remain subject to local weather, road conditions, border access, and permit regulations.
Preparation for the Kailash Kora
Travelers should prepare for long walking days, high altitude, cold temperatures, strong sunlight, and basic facilities during the Kora. Good trekking shoes, warm layers, waterproof protection, sunglasses, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, personal medication, and a suitable daypack are recommended.
A comfortable level of physical fitness is important because the Kora includes steep ascents and descents at high altitude. Travelers should also be prepared for changing weather and limited services in the remote mountain section.
Responsible Pilgrimage Travel
The Kailash region is both culturally and environmentally sensitive. Travelers should respect local religious traditions, pilgrimage practices, monasteries, and sacred sites throughout the journey.
Please avoid littering, minimize plastic waste, follow local regulations, and do not disturb religious objects or natural surroundings. Responsible travel helps protect this important spiritual and Himalayan environment for future pilgrims.
