Overview

The 14-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Poon Hill is an extraordinary adventure that brings together the best aspects of Nepal’s natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and breathtaking mountain vistas. This immersive trekking experience will not only challenge your physical endurance but also offer you an intimate glimpse into the lives of the people who call the mountains home.

The journey begins in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, known for its vibrant atmosphere and historical significance. Kathmandu is a blend of ancient temples, modern life, and unique culture. You’ll have the chance to explore some of Nepal’s most revered UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The day is dedicated to sightseeing, where you’ll visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, a royal palace complex filled with intricate carvings and statues that tell the story of Nepal’s past. Next, you’ll visit the iconic Swayambhunath Stupa (also known as the Monkey Temple), which offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding mountains. The Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest in the world, is another highlight, where you can take in the peaceful atmosphere as monks chant prayers. Finally, Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu sites, will provide insight into Nepal’s religious traditions. These cultural explorations are the perfect way to get acclimatized to the altitude and the local way of life before your trek begins.

After your cultural exploration of Kathmandu, you will head to Pokhara, the gateway to the Annapurna region. Known for its tranquility and picturesque lakeside settings, Pokhara offers spectacular views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) mountains. It is also the place where you will start your trek into the Himalayas. The drive to Pokhara is scenic, taking you along the winding roads of the Prithvi Highway, which offers views of lush green hills, terraced fields, and local villages. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you will check into your hotel and have the chance to relax by Phewa Lake, a serene spot to reflect on the journey ahead.

The Trek Begins: From Pokhara to Ghorepani

The real adventure begins on Day 4 with a drive to Nayapul, the starting point of your trek. From here, you’ll make your way to Ulleri, a traditional village that marks the beginning of the Annapurna Sanctuary trek. The trail initially ascends through terraced rice paddies and lush forests, offering an introduction to the natural beauty of the region. As you gain elevation, you’ll pass through small villages where you can observe local life and traditions. The path leads you through Birethanti and Tikhedhunga, both charming villages before reaching the steep stone steps of Ulleri.

On Day 5, your trek continues through dense rhododendron forests—a mesmerizing spectacle, especially during the spring season when the forests are in full bloom. The trail becomes steeper as you ascend, offering intermittent views of snow-capped peaks. As you reach Ghorepani, a beautiful village nestled in the foothills, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Annapurna South and Dhaulagiri, two of the tallest peaks in the region. This is the ideal place to rest and soak in the majestic surroundings before your early morning adventure at Poon Hill.

The Iconic Poon Hill Sunrise

Day 6 is an early start as you hike up to Poon Hill (3,210m) for one of the most famous sunrise views in the world. The hike to the top takes around an hour, but the reward is worth every step. From Poon Hill, you will witness the first rays of the sun illuminating the entire Annapurna range, with peaks like Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhre turning shades of orange, pink, and gold. It’s a mesmerizing sight and one that will stay with you long after the trek is over. After watching the sunrise, you’ll return to Ghorepani for breakfast and continue your trek toward Tadapani, passing through rhododendron forests and picturesque ridges. The journey takes you through Deurali and Banthanti, where the trail levels out before descending into the Tadapani village.

Through the Annapurna Sanctuary to Base Camp

On Day 7, your trek continues from Tadapani to Chhomrong, a beautiful Gurung village located at the entrance to the Annapurna Sanctuary. The trail winds through lush forests and terraced fields, with excellent views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre. Chhomrong marks the last settlement before you enter the more remote areas of the sanctuary. As you make your way further into the Annapurna region, you’ll leave the human settlements behind and begin to experience the true solitude of the Himalayas.

The trek becomes progressively more awe-inspiring as you ascend to Bamboo (2,310m) on Day 8, a quiet village surrounded by thick bamboo forests. The terrain changes as you leave the lower regions behind and enter the sanctuary proper, where towering peaks and pristine landscapes dominate the horizon. The air becomes cooler and fresher as you make your way through this idyllic landscape, a perfect place to reflect on the journey thus far.

Reach the Heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary: Annapurna Base Camp

On Day 9, the trail takes you deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary towards the ultimate goal: Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m). The trek is both challenging and exhilarating as you pass through Himalaya, Deurali, and Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) before finally reaching your destination. The Annapurna Sanctuary is a natural amphitheater surrounded by towering peaks like Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the iconic Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). Standing at ABC, you will be at the heart of the Annapurna range, and the 360-degree views of these snow-capped peaks are truly unforgettable. The feeling of reaching Annapurna Base Camp is one of triumph, and the sight of these mighty mountains will leave you in awe of their power and beauty.

A Relaxing Return: From Annapurna Base Camp to Pokhara

The return journey begins on Day 10 as you retrace your steps through MBC, Himalaya, and Deurali, heading back towards Bamboo. Along the way, you’ll experience the scenery from a different perspective, which gives the landscape a whole new character. On Day 11, you’ll continue your descent towards Jhinu Danda, where you can relax in the natural hot springs by the Modi Khola river, soothing your muscles after days of strenuous trekking. A dip in the hot springs is the perfect way to rejuvenate your body and mind before completing the final stretch of the trek.

On Day 12, the trek will take you to Nayapul, from where a short drive back to Pokhara offers a chance to rest and celebrate your successful journey. You’ll be able to unwind by Phewa Lake and enjoy the relaxed pace of life before heading back to Kathmandu on Day 13. After arriving in Kathmandu, the final evening includes a farewell dinner, allowing you to reminisce about the incredible journey with your fellow trekkers and guide.

The towering spire of Machhapuchhre, which is sacred and off-limits for climbers, creates a jaw-dropping sight as it looms above, its distinctive shape easily recognizable.

As you continue from MBC, the environment shifts from forested terrain to a more alpine landscape. The trail climbs steadily, and with each step, the Himalayan giants come into full view. The grandeur of the landscape increases as you approach Annapurna Base Camp, situated at 4,130 meters. The surrounding amphitheater of towering peaks—including Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and other snow-capped summits—creates one of the most awe-inspiring settings in the entire trekking world. Standing at ABC, you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and reverence for the sheer scale and beauty of the mountains around you.

After taking time to rest and enjoy the views, you’ll settle in for the night at the Annapurna Base Camp teahouse. The setting is serene and quiet, with the surrounding peaks standing guard over the camp. The evening offers an unforgettable opportunity to watch the sunset paint the mountains in golden hues before retiring for the night. Overnight at Annapurna Base Camp.

Today, you’ll begin your descent from Annapurna Base Camp, but not before enjoying an early morning spectacle—sunrise over the Annapurna range. The views of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhre will leave you spellbound as the entire landscape turns golden. After soaking in the sunrise, you’ll start your descent, retracing the trail back to Machhapuchhre Base Camp.

The journey back follows the same route, but with a different perspective of the landscape. As you trek down through Deurali and Himalaya, you’ll observe the changing terrain as you lose altitude. The forests and rhododendron groves provide shade and offer a sense of tranquility as you gradually descend. You will return to Bamboo, where you will spend the night. The return to Bamboo feels rewarding, as you can now look back at the breathtaking peaks you’ve trekked through, taking in the sheer magnificence of the Annapurna Sanctuary. Overnight in Bamboo.
