Why Govinda Prasad Sapkota Is the Backbone of Nepal’s Trekking Industry
From the green hills of Aapswara, Nilkantha-12 in Dhading, where he spent his childhood, to the snowfields of Everest Base Camp, Govinda Prasad Sapkota — a veteran Nepal trekking leader and Founder & Managing Director of Mountain King Treks & Expedition Pvt. Ltd. — has built a life story that inspires generations. Proudly regarded as the backbone of Nepal’s trekking industry, he has over 35 years of experience guiding travelers across the Himalayas. His transformation from a humble porter to one of Nepal’s most respected trekking experts reflects the dedication, resilience, and passion that define his career.
Govinda’s story is not just one of personal success but a reflection of Nepal’s trekking industry itself — a story rooted deeply in the country’s culture, mountains, and spirit. He embodies the values of integrity, hard work, and genuine care for both his clients and the natural environment. Over more than three decades, his leadership and vision have helped shape the standards and reputation of Nepal as one of the world’s premier trekking destinations.
His early life in Dhading, a serene mid-hill district of Nepal, laid the foundation of his character. Growing up in a simple farming community, Govinda learned resilience and humility from a young age. These qualities became crucial as he embarked on a challenging path — from carrying heavy loads as a trekking porter to mastering the complexities of guiding international travelers safely through some of the world’s most demanding Himalayan terrains.
Through decades of experience, Govinda has gained unmatched knowledge of Nepal’s diverse trekking routes, including Everest, Annapurna, Manaslu, Dolpo, Upper Mustang, and many remote regions. His commitment to authentic, sustainable tourism and personalized service has earned him the trust of thousands of adventurers worldwide.
Today, Govinda Prasad Sapkota is widely recognized not just as a trekking leader but as the very backbone of Nepal’s trekking industry — someone who has dedicated his life to promoting Nepal’s natural beauty and rich cultural heritage while fostering responsible tourism practices that benefit local communities.
🌾 Rooted in Simplicity – The Early Days in Dhading
Born and raised in the peaceful mid-hill region of Aapswara, Nilkantha-12, Dhading, at an elevation of approximately 700 meters above sea level, Govinda Prasad Sapkota’s childhood was deeply connected to the rhythms of nature, community, and tradition. Surrounded by lush terraced fields, dense forests, and the enduring warmth of a close-knit village, his early years were marked by a profound appreciation for simplicity and hard work.
He pursued his education at Nilkantha Balamandir Secondary School in Dhading Besi, where he successfully completed his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) in 2043 B.S.. However, beyond formal education, Govinda learned invaluable life lessons about discipline, respect, and gratitude — values instilled not only through textbooks but through the day-to-day experiences of rural village life.
Growing up in this environment nurtured his deep-rooted connection to Nepal’s natural landscape and traditional culture, planting the seeds for a lifelong devotion to the mountains, people, and adventure tourism that would later define his extraordinary career.
🎒 The First Trek – From Porter to Kalapathar
After completing his schooling, Govinda Prasad Sapkota moved to Kathmandu with little more than hope, determination, and a strong will to succeed. With no money, no connections, and no clear direction, he began his journey in the trekking industry at the very bottom—as a porter.
His first assignment was an arduous 30-day trek from Jiri to Everest Base Camp and Kalapathar (5,545 meters / 18,192 feet), carrying heavy loads on his back. The path was rugged and unfamiliar, his shoes worn thin, and the physical challenges immense. Yet, his spirit remained unbroken.
“The bag was heavy, the trail unknown, and the weather harsh, but my determination was stronger,” Govinda recalls. “I kept telling myself to keep walking, keep learning, and never give up.”
This grueling first trek was much more than a job—it was the beginning of a lifelong passion for the mountains and trekking. The hardships he endured forged resilience and gave him deep insight into the physical and mental demands of trekking life, lessons he would carry forward in every step of his career.
That journey ignited a fire that would drive him for over three decades, transforming him from a humble porter into one of Nepal’s most respected trekking leaders and a true pillar of Nepal’s adventure tourism.
🏞️ Climbing the Ranks – Hard Work, No Shortcuts
Govinda Prasad Sapkota’s rise through the trekking industry was not an overnight success—it was the result of patience, humility, and relentless hard work. Starting as an assistant guide, cook, and kitchen helper, he embraced every role with dedication and a strong desire to learn. Each position taught him invaluable lessons about the realities of trekking life and the importance of serving others selflessly.
He faced the harshest conditions imaginable—trekking through monsoon rains, snowstorms, and treacherous landslides, often with little or no rest. Many nights were spent cooking for tired trekkers at odd hours while keeping a constant watch over their safety and well-being. His commitment went far beyond professional duty—he cared for every trekker as if they were family.
Govinda follows the timeless teaching of Lord Krishna from the Bhagavad Gita:
“Karma Gara, Phalko Aasha Nagar” — Do your work sincerely, without attachment to the fruits.
For him, this means working with full dedication, giving his best in every step, and trusting that results will come in their own time. Even when exhausted, he never complained. He always presented himself as strong, energetic, and ready to face any challenge.
He also believes in the universal truth: “No Pain, No Gain.” Every difficult climb, every sleepless night in the mountains, and every obstacle faced on the trail was an opportunity to grow stronger, wiser, and better prepared for the next challenge.
Known for his honesty, loyalty, and tireless dedication, Govinda earned the trust of countless clients and the respect of his colleagues. His reputation grew not only because of his skills as a trekking leader but also because of his unshakable integrity, positive spirit, and unbreakable work ethic.
🗻 35 Years Across the Himalayas – Walking Every Trail
Over more than thirty-five years, Govinda Prasad Sapkota has journeyed extensively across Nepal’s vast and diverse mountain landscapes, becoming a living legend among trekking communities. His deep knowledge and experience span some of the most iconic and remote regions of the Himalayas, including the Everest Region—from the classic Everest Base Camp trek to the challenging Three Passes and serene Gokyo Lakes.
In the Annapurna region, Govinda has guided countless trekkers along the Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, and Poon Hill, offering both popular and off-the-beaten-path experiences. He has also expertly navigated the rugged trails of the Manaslu and Tsum Valley, blending cultural immersion with natural beauty, as well as the mystical landscapes of Upper Mustang and the hidden villages of Nar Phu.
His expertise extends further into the wild and remote terrains of Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and the pristine waters of Rara Lake. Govinda’s trekking footprints reach the farthest corners of Nepal, including the challenging wilderness of Humla, Mugu, Khaptad, and the enchanting Limi Valley.
Beyond trekking, Govinda has led numerous jungle safaris across Nepal’s rich biodiversity hotspots, including Chitwan, Bardia, and Koshi Tappu, as well as cultural tours through the historic cities of Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur.
His comprehensive expertise across Nepal’s varied geography and cultures makes him not only an exceptional trekking leader but a true guardian of Nepal’s natural and cultural heritage.
🔱 Mount Kailash – A Sacred Journey Repeated Over 40 Times
Among all his adventures in the Himalayas, one holds a truly sacred place in Govinda Prasad Sapkota’s heart — the Mount Kailash Yatra. Over the years, he has led this spiritual pilgrimage more than 40 times, an achievement few in the trekking and travel world can claim.
Located in the remote western part of Tibet, Mount Kailash is revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers as the center of the universe and the dwelling place of divine energy. For Hindus, it is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, while Buddhists see it as the home of Demchok, a representation of ultimate bliss. Pilgrims from all over the world come here seeking blessings, peace, and spiritual awakening.
Govinda has guided pilgrims via multiple routes: the classic Tatopani–Khasa border (before the 2015 Gorkha earthquake), the Timure–Kerung route, and the challenging Simikot high-pass trek that requires eight days of walking before entering Tibet. Each route brings its own challenges — from high-altitude passes and unpredictable weather to remote wilderness far from any modern facilities. Yet, he always ensured that his groups completed the journey safely and meaningfully.
In addition to the trekking routes, Govinda has also led the Mount Kailash Overland Pilgrimage Tour, a journey by vehicle across the Tibetan plateau. This route allows pilgrims with limited time or physical ability to still experience the profound beauty and spiritual energy of Kailash and Lake Manasarovar. Even in an overland journey, the altitude and remoteness demand expert guidance — something Govinda provides with unmatched skill and care.
“Some say Kailash is just a destination. But to me, it is a calling. Every journey there is not simply a trip — it is a prayer.”
For Govinda, the kora — the sacred 52-kilometer circumambulation around Mount Kailash — is not just a ritual but a transformative experience. He walks alongside pilgrims, sharing stories of faith, culture, and endurance, ensuring that everyone feels supported, both physically and spiritually.
Even today, although the Tatopani border remains closed for pilgrimage travel, Kailash remains deeply etched in his heart. The mountain’s sacred presence continues to inspire him, reminding him that guiding is not just about reaching a place — it’s about touching lives and souls along the way.
🌏 Across Borders – Bhutan, Tibet, Sikkim & India
While Govinda Prasad Sapkota has built his legacy in the mountains of Nepal, his guiding expertise has taken him far beyond its borders, leading travelers through some of the most culturally rich and geographically stunning regions of Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim, Darjeeling, and India.
In Tibet, he has organized and led tours to Lhasa, exploring the sacred Potala Palace, the spiritual Jokhang Temple, and the ancient monastic universities of Sera and Drepung. His journeys have ventured to the remote Everest North Base Camp, the mysterious ruins of the Guge Kingdom, the peaceful Samye Monastery, the high-altitude splendor of Ganden, and the wild beauty of the Kharta Valley.
In Bhutan, known as the “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” Govinda has guided travelers to Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha, offering deep insights into Bhutanese culture, traditional monasteries, and the country’s unique philosophy of Gross National Happiness.
His tours in India have included the lush, tea-covered hills of Darjeeling, the cultural charm of Kalimpong, and the Himalayan beauty of Sikkim, including Gangtok, Rumtek Monastery, and Pelling. These journeys have combined scenic landscapes with rich spiritual traditions, providing travelers with unforgettable cross-border experiences.
One of his most remarkable expeditions took place in 2005 — the Lhasa to Kathmandu Cycling and Camping Tour. This ambitious journey crossed the Kharta Valley, passed through Everest North Base Camp, and traversed high-altitude passes on the Tibetan Plateau before descending into Nepal. It was a test of endurance, skill, and adaptability, blending the raw adventure of overland travel with the profound cultural depth of the Himalayas.
Wherever he travels — whether on foot, by vehicle, or by bicycle — Govinda brings the same values of care, respect, and cultural sensitivity that define his work in Nepal. His cross-border adventures have given him a truly trans-Himalayan perspective, allowing him to connect travelers not just to destinations, but to the deeper stories, traditions, and spirit of the places they visit.
❤️ The Greatest Award – Love and Trust from Around the World
While many in the tourism industry measure success through awards, medals, and official recognition, Govinda Prasad Sapkota treasures something far greater — the love, trust, and heartfelt appreciation of the people he has guided.
Over the decades, he has received countless recommendations, glowing reviews, and expressions of gratitude from trekkers across Asia, Europe, the Americas, and beyond. Many of these travelers have returned to Nepal multiple times, bringing their families, friends, and colleagues to experience the mountains under Govinda’s care. Some keep in touch for years, sending letters, sharing photographs, and exchanging festive greetings — bonds that extend far beyond the trail.
For Govinda, the smile of a satisfied trekker, the warm handshake at the end of a journey, and the emotional “thank you” spoken from the heart mean far more than any framed certificate from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), or the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN).
“A certificate hangs on a wall. But trust lives in the heart. And the love I have received from people across the world is my greatest award.”
This genuine recognition, earned not through politics or prestige but through service, safety, and sincerity, is what truly makes Govinda the backbone of Nepal’s trekking industry. It is a reward that cannot fade, tarnish, or be forgotten — because it is carried in the hearts of those whose lives he has touched in the Himalayas.
