Upper Dolpo Trek (27 Days)

Today is a cultural immersion in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley, rich with ancient heritage and spiritual significance. After breakfast, a professional cultural city guide will take you to explore several of Nepal’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

We begin with a visit to Kathmandu Durbar Square, where ancient temples, carved windows, and royal courtyards echo the grandeur of the Malla kings. From there, we ascend to Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, where the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha gaze peacefully over the valley.

Next, you’ll experience the deep serenity of Boudhanath Stupa, a massive white dome that is one of the holiest Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage sites outside of Tibet. Circumambulating the stupa alongside monks, prayer wheels spinning, and mantras in the air, you’ll feel the spiritual pulse of this sacred place.

Finally, we visit Pashupatinath Temple, the holiest site for Hindus in Nepal. Set beside the sacred Bagmati River, it is a deeply spiritual place where rituals of life and death unfold in the open — a profound insight into the philosophy and reverence of Hindu culture.

In the afternoon, we return to the hotel for final trek preparations: reviewing the gear, ensuring permits are secured, and preparing all logistics. You'll also meet your trekking crew, including your guide, and receive a final orientation before the real journey begins.

As this is your last evening in the city before heading into the wilderness of Dolpo, it’s a good time to enjoy a peaceful dinner and rest well. From tomorrow, your adventure into Nepal’s most remote highlands truly begins.

After an early breakfast at the hotel, we transfer you to the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport for the scenic flight to Nepalgunj, located in the flat Terai plains of western Nepal, near the Indian border. The flight offers a beautiful contrast to the Kathmandu Valley — trading green hills for the subtropical landscape below.

Nepalgunj is a bustling trade hub with a mix of Hindu and Muslim culture, colorful markets, and warm weather. Upon arrival, our staff will receive you and transfer you to a comfortable hotel. In the afternoon, you can explore the local bazaar, try Terai-style snacks, or simply rest and enjoy the change of pace. This overnight stay helps break the journey and prepares us for the early morning flight into the Himalayas.

All arrangements for logistics, food supplies, staff, and equipment are finalized here before entering the remote Dolpo region. Relax and enjoy your evening with a good meal and rest — tomorrow, we enter a different world.

We rise early for a short but spectacular mountain flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal, the gateway to Upper Dolpo. The tiny airstrip clings to a hillside, and the flight itself is a highlight — soaring between ridges and revealing the stunning terrain we’ll soon be walking through.

Upon landing at Juphal, we meet our full trekking support crew, including porters or mules, kitchen staff, and your guide team, all assembled and ready to begin this incredible journey. After a quick equipment recheck and breakfast, we begin our first trekking day.

The trail descends through terraced fields and passes through the small villages of Kageni and Kalagauda, following the Thuli Bheri River. You’ll notice the change in air — cooler, fresher, and more remote. We follow a well-established path to Dunai, the district headquarters of Dolpa, a small administrative town surrounded by dramatic scenery.

At Dunai, we set up our first campsite, and the kitchen team prepares fresh, warm meals. There’s time in the evening to explore the small monasteries and the main village. Dunai gives us a gentle introduction to the culture, lifestyle, and remoteness of this far-western region.

After a hearty breakfast prepared by our kitchen crew, we begin our journey entering Shey Phoksundo National Park, crossing a suspension bridge over the Thuli Bheri River. The trail winds through beautiful forested paths, gradually ascending alongside the Suli Khola River, offering occasional glimpses of emerald waters and peaceful forest scenery.

We pass small settlements and stop for lunch near the riverside, where the soothing sound of rushing water blends with the rustle of pine and rhododendron leaves. The trail brings us through narrow gorges, shady canopies, and pristine nature as we reach the remote village of Chhepka, surrounded by terraced fields and pine-clad hills.

Our camp is set just outside the village, in a serene meadow next to the river. After tea and snacks, you can take a short walk around the village or simply rest and enjoy the silence of the wild Dolpo region.

We start the day early, leaving behind the forested charm of Chhepka and continuing our journey deeper into the Shey Phoksundo National Park. The trail ascends gradually through a wild gorge, crisscrossing the Suligad Khola, the river that originates from Phoksundo Lake. The air becomes cooler and crisper as we gain altitude, and the landscape shifts between deep pine and fir forests, cascading waterfalls, and moss-covered stones.

We pass through Rechi, a peaceful riverside spot with towering cliffs and a few seasonal herders' shelters. Continuing from here, the trail becomes more dramatic — steep walls of rock surround us on both sides, and the sound of the rushing river echoes below.

By mid-afternoon, we arrive at the vicinity of the Amchi Hospital (3,150m), a unique and important stop on our journey. This traditional Tibetan herbal medicine clinic, supported by foreign and local initiatives, serves the entire Dolpo region. Staffed by Amchis (Tibetan doctors), the hospital prepares and administers herbal remedies made from wild Himalayan plants.

We can visit the small herbal medicine museum and meet the Amchis to learn about ancient healing practices passed down through generations. It's a rare insight into Dolpo’s centuries-old medical heritage and the harmony between nature and culture here.

Today’s walk takes us to one of the most iconic and stunning natural destinations in all of Nepal — the enchanting Shey Phoksundo Lake. After breakfast, we set out on a beautifully scenic trail that begins to climb more steadily, with glimpses of snowcapped peaks appearing above the high cliffs.

We soon reach the majestic Phoksundo Waterfall, one of the highest in Nepal, dropping nearly 200 meters in a thundering cascade. We pause here to take in the sound and spectacle — a powerful reminder of the natural forces that carved this valley over millennia.

The trail continues with switchbacks that lead us higher along the ridge, offering our first breathtaking views of the deep turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake far below. As we descend carefully along the narrow trail cut into the cliffside, the sight of the lake slowly grows until we finally arrive at its shores near Ringmo Village.

The lake, surrounded by alpine conifer forests and towering rock walls, radiates a pure, crystal-clear blue that almost seems unreal. Phoksundo is sacred to both Buddhist and Bonpo communities, and no boats or swimming are allowed, preserving its spiritual and ecological sanctity.

Those interested in the region’s unique spiritual heritage can visit the Tshowa (Bon) Monastery, located on a ridge above the lake. This ancient Bonpo monastery is an active center of worship and holds deep significance for local communities who practice the pre-Buddhist Bon religion. Its interior, decorated with age-old murals and butter lamps, gives insight into a mystical and less-traveled path of Himalayan spirituality.

After a restful day by the lake, the trek resumes as you leave behind the glistening waters of Phoksundo and gradually ascend into even more remote and pristine terrain. The trail hugs the cliffs on the western side of the lake, narrow and dramatic in places, with occasional glimpses back over your shoulder at the stunning lake below.

After a while, you descend slightly and begin following the Phoksundo Khola, heading deeper into the wild heart of Upper Dolpo. The landscape changes as you move away from the blue lake and enter an alpine environment dominated by rocky hills, juniper shrubs, and sparse forests of fir and pine.

The route into the heart of the inner Dolpo valley is characterized by long stretches of solitude, with only the sound of the river and the crunch of your boots on the trail. You may encounter yak caravans or herders on the way, reinforcing the feeling that you are now on one of the most remote paths in Nepal.

After about 5 to 6 hours of trekking through wild, untouched country, you reach Sallaghari, a scenic campsite set among dense pine and fir trees. The name “Sallaghari” itself means “pine forest,” and the shaded grove provides a peaceful, sheltered environment for the night. Your crew will set up camp near the river, and you’ll enjoy another hearty dinner surrounded by towering cliffs and clear mountain air. The campsite is a perfect staging ground for tomorrow’s steeper climb to the high camp before Kang La Pass.

The climb to the pass is steep and slow, following a switchback trail over scree and snow patches. Reaching the top of Kang La is a breathtaking experience — literally and figuratively — with prayer flags fluttering in the high winds and panoramic views stretching across the horizon.

Shey Gompa, believed to be over 800 years old, belongs to the Chaiba lineage of Tibetan Buddhism (closely related to the Kagyu school). In fact, many pilgrims circumambulate Crystal Mountain in a kora (ritual circuit) similar to Mount Kailash in Tibet. The day begins with a steady ascent from Shey, winding up along a rocky trail that gains altitude slowly but steadily, passing yak pastures and scattered alpine flora.

As you reach the top of Saldang La, you are rewarded with expansive vistas of barren cliffs, dry riverbeds, and the arid but majestic landscape of the Upper Dolpo plateau. The wind here is often strong, and the high altitude demands careful pacing and hydration, but the grandeur of the scenery is inspiring.

From the pass, the descent to Namgung Gompa begins. The trail meanders through high yak grazing meadows, along sheer hillsides, and finally into the deep, narrow valley that hides this little-known monastery. Namgung Gompa is dramatically perched on a rocky slope and is surrounded by scattered fields and traditional stone homes. It is a remote and peaceful place where a small number of monks maintain the centuries-old traditions of the region.

You'll set up camp near the monastery and, time permitting, visit the gompa to learn more about its teachings and observe the daily lives of the monks who continue to keep Dolpo's spiritual heritage alive.

After a quiet night at the remote Namgung Gompa, today’s trail offers a magnificent shift in landscape as you begin your descent into the expansive high-altitude village of Saldang. Unlike the more forested lower regions, this section of the trek traverses through high, open desert-like plateau—surprisingly arid yet stunningly beautiful.

You may pass local yak caravans and villagers tending to livestock or collecting brushwood, as Saldang lies on a traditional salt trading route to Tibet. After 3–4 hours of gentle walking, the path begins a final descent, and you’ll see Saldang appearing in the distance—a large settlement spread across terraced hillsides. With over 80 households, this is one of the biggest and most culturally vibrant villages in Inner Dolpo.

Once you arrive, you’ll set up camp near the village, with the afternoon free to explore. Saldang sits at the intersection of trade, tradition, and spirituality. Its stone-built homes, mani walls, and chortens reflect centuries of rich Tibetan Buddhist culture. If time permits, you can visit a local gompa, meet villagers, or even witness weaving or butter-churning practices still done in the traditional way.

Leaving behind the main trade route of Saldang, today’s journey takes you further off the beaten path to the secluded and mystical Yangze Gompa, nestled in a tributary valley of the main Dolpo region. The trail initially descends gently through cultivated fields before gradually ascending along the side valleys of the Nagon Khola (river), weaving in and out of narrow gorges, sandy paths, and ancient mani walls.

This is a culturally rich area rarely visited by outsiders, and along the way, you may pass traditional Tibetan-style homes, herding camps, and perhaps locals riding horseback between settlements. The isolation of the region only enhances the sense of stepping back in time.

After 5–6 hours of trekking through this quiet and starkly beautiful landscape, you arrive at Yangze Gompa, a small monastery hidden among the cliffs. The gompa is one of the oldest Bonpo monasteries in the region and holds significant religious importance. The Bon tradition, which predates Buddhism, retains unique practices and iconography, and a visit here gives you a rare insight into one of the world's oldest spiritual paths.

Camp will be set up close to the monastery, and if monks are present, you may be invited to observe rituals or learn more about the ancient Bonpo philosophies.

You’ll pass through scattered settlements like Khoma Gaon, a small cluster of stone homes and fields where local families cultivate buckwheat, barley, and potatoes. Life in this remote region remains deeply traditional, and it's not uncommon to see villagers weaving or drying crops on flat rooftops while children herd yaks and goats nearby.

From Khoma, the trail climbs gently and follows the banks of the Namga Khola, eventually leading to Sibu, a remote pastureland and seasonal settlement used by herders. Sibu offers a quiet, open space along the river, surrounded by rolling brown hills and sparse alpine vegetation. This is a peaceful spot to rest before tomorrow's approach to Jeng La.

Upon reaching Jeng La Phedi, you’ll set up camp at the base of the pass. This is a stark and exposed spot, but it provides a perfect launching point for tomorrow’s early morning crossing of the high Jeng La Pass (5,090m). You’ll have time to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the challenging but rewarding day ahead.

Today is one of the most spectacular and physically demanding days of the trek, as you ascend and cross the Jeng La Pass (5,090m). The trail begins with a steep climb from Jeng La Phedi, zigzagging up a gravelly slope with magnificent views unfolding behind you as you rise.

Reaching the top of Jeng La is an incredible reward—prayer flags flutter in the wind, and on a clear day, you’ll be treated to panoramic views, including a distant glimpse of the majestic Dhaulagiri (8,167m) to the south. Pause here to soak in the vast beauty of the Dolpo highlands before beginning your careful descent.

The trail down from the pass is steep at first but gradually eases as you drop into the broad, windswept valley of Tarap. The landscape becomes more hospitable with signs of settlements and cultivated fields appearing as you approach the beautiful Tokyu village, considered one of the highest permanent settlements in the world. Tokyu is a cluster of stone houses surrounded by barley fields, chortens, and ancient Buddhist monasteries.

Camp will be set up near the village, and you can take a stroll in the evening to explore the serene and culturally rich environment of Tokyu.

After the strenuous previous day, today’s walk is shorter and far more relaxed. The trail from Tokyu to Dho Tarap follows a gently descending path through the wide, open Tarap Valley—one of the most picturesque valleys in the entire Dolpo region. You’ll walk alongside the Tarap Chu River, passing through farmlands, prayer walls, and occasional yak caravans that lend the route a timeless feel.

As you approach Dho Tarap, you’ll begin to notice more signs of civilization, with Tibetan-style houses, colorful prayer flags, and chortens dotting the landscape. Dho Tarap is a large and culturally vibrant village, home to both Bon and Buddhist communities. The people here are known for their deep-rooted Tibetan traditions and hospitality. You’ll have the afternoon free to explore the village, visit local gompas (including the Ribo Bhumpa Monastery), or simply relax and recover in the peaceful mountain atmosphere.

This lower altitude also brings comfort and better sleep, which is a welcome reprieve after many days above 4,000 meters.

After the long and rewarding journey across high passes and remote terrain, today is a well-deserved rest day in the culturally rich village of Dho Tarap. Nestled in the heart of the Tarap Valley, this settlement is not only one of the highest inhabited villages in Nepal but also a center of spiritual and cultural life for the Dolpo region.

You’ll have the entire day to relax, explore, and immerse yourself in the traditional lifestyle of the Dolpo-pa people. The villagers here follow a mixture of Tibetan Buddhism and Bon religion, and it’s common to see monks, prayer wheels, and locals in traditional dress. You may visit important local monasteries like Ribo Bhumpa Gompa or the ancient Bon Gompa, each offering a fascinating look into the spiritual heritage of Dolpo.

This day also provides an opportunity to do some laundry, reorganize gear, write in your journal, or simply enjoy tea with a view of the barley fields and whitewashed chortens. Your team may also restock supplies from local sources or enjoy fresh mountain vegetables, depending on availability.

Taking this rest day is also important for your body, helping with recovery before beginning the descent through the deep gorges of the lower Tarap valley.

Leaving Dho Tarap, the trail begins to descend gradually, following the Tarap Khola (river) into one of the most dramatic sections of the trek. The journey today takes you through a deep, winding gorge with soaring cliffs and waterfalls cascading from high above. The stark cliffs, sculpted by wind and water, rise dramatically on either side of the narrow trail, creating a surreal, almost canyon-like landscape.

As you move lower, the landscape slowly transitions from the dry, alpine environment to greener, more forested terrain. You’ll cross several wooden and suspension bridges as the path hugs the riverbank. Some sections of the trail are carved directly into the rock wall, requiring careful footing, while others pass through small pastures and sparse coniferous forests.

Eventually, you arrive at Serkam, a peaceful campsite nestled in a narrow section of the gorge, close to the river. The sound of rushing water fills the air, and the warmer climate here is a refreshing contrast to the cold of the high Himalayas. This spot is used by herders and trekkers alike and offers a serene night under the stars after a long descent.

Today, your journey continues through the increasingly lush and vibrant lower Dolpo landscape. From Serkam, the trail descends steadily, following the course of the Tarap Khola, which gradually merges with the Thuli Bheri River. The narrow canyon begins to open up, and you’ll pass through beautiful pine and juniper forests, terraced farmlands, and the occasional herder’s shelter.

The trail can be rugged and rocky in parts, requiring careful footing, and there are several exciting river crossings over suspension and log bridges. As you descend, the warmer climate brings back the hum of insects, the flutter of birds, and the scent of wildflowers—a stark contrast to the barren high-altitude regions you've left behind.

You eventually arrive at the charming village of Tarakot, an important historical trading post and fortress settlement once used to collect taxes from traders journeying between Tibet and the lower valleys. Tarakot is beautifully situated on a hill above the Thuli Bheri River and is adorned with mani walls, chortens, and ancient red-painted monasteries.

If time allows, you can take a short evening walk to visit the Sandul Gompa, located near the confluence of the Barbung and Thuli Bheri Rivers.

Today marks the penultimate trekking day as you head toward the district headquarters of Dunai. Departing from Tarakot, the trail descends gradually along the Thuli Bheri River, passing through scenic river valleys, cultivated farmlands, and small Magar and Chhetri villages.

The trail is well-trodden and offers a pleasant walk, with excellent views of cascading waterfalls, pine forests, and the occasional terraced hillside. As you near Dunai, the bustling village life slowly re-emerges. After days in remote wilderness, the sight of shops, schools, and government buildings signals your return to civilization.

Dunai is the administrative and commercial center of Dolpo District, set on the banks of the river and surrounded by high hills. After reaching the town, you’ll have time to relax, take a proper wash, perhaps visit a local teahouse, or simply enjoy your final night in the trekking region.

After a restful night in Dunai, today is your final trekking day. The trail from Dunai to Juphal is relatively short and easy, following the Bheri River upstream before ascending gently toward the airstrip. You’ll pass through cultivated fields, apple orchards, and the lively village of Kalagauda, where locals often greet trekkers with smiles and curiosity.

As you gradually climb the final hill to Juphal, the familiar sounds of the river give way to the buzz of village life and the distant hum of occasional aircraft. Juphal is a small but significant town in the region, serving as the main air gateway to and from Dolpo.

Upon reaching Juphal, you’ll have time to explore the local market, interact with villagers, and reflect on your remarkable journey through some of the most remote and breathtaking landscapes in Nepal. Your trekking crew will begin packing and preparing for the early morning flight.

Today begins with an early morning flight from the Juphal airstrip to Nepalgunj, a brief but thrilling experience offering a final glimpse of the mountains from the air. Upon arrival in Nepalgunj, you’ll transfer to a connecting domestic flight back to Kathmandu, flying over the southern hills and valleys of Nepal.

Once in Kathmandu, a private vehicle will transfer you to your hotel in the city. After days in the high Himalayas, the comforts of Kathmandu—hot showers, clean clothes, and delicious meals—will be warmly welcomed.

You’ll have the rest of the afternoon free to relax at your hotel, enjoy café culture in Thamel, or stroll around the nearby heritage sites if time permits.

After your incredible adventure in Upper Dolpo, today is a well-deserved free day to relax and soak up the vibrant culture and atmosphere of Kathmandu. You can spend the day exploring at your own pace — whether it’s visiting some iconic sights like Patan Durbar Square, wandering the lively streets of Thamel, shopping for traditional handicrafts, or simply enjoying a peaceful café or spa session.

In the evening, join us for a special farewell dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant. Experience the warmth of Nepali hospitality as you enjoy delicious local cuisine accompanied by live cultural performances, including traditional music and dance that beautifully showcase Nepal’s rich heritage.

This farewell dinner is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the end of your trek, share stories with fellow travelers, and express gratitude to your guides and team.

On your final day in Nepal, a Mountain King Treks representative will accompany you to Tribhuvan International Airport for your homeward journey. As a symbol of Nepali Hindu culture, you will be greeted with a heartfelt Namaste 🙏, and honored with a Khada — a ceremonial white scarf rooted in Buddhist tradition, symbolizing respect, purity, and safe travels.
